Why we are taking part

1) Addressing Homelessness Among Older Women

Did you know that up to 240,000 women aged 55+ are at risk of homelessness in Australia? Many of these women fall into the ‘missing middle’ – too wealthy for social housing but unable to afford their own homes. They often find themselves in housing limbo, spending retirement savings on rent with no secure housing options. Domestic and family violence is a major factor contributing to homelessness among women over 55.  At Garden Village, we believe in collaborating across sectors to create safe, secure, and affordable housing solutions for vulnerable individuals.

2) Safe and healthy workplaces for all

As an organisation with 280 dedicated employees, we recognise the importance of creating a safe and supportive work environment. Our partnership with Liberty allows us to:

  • Share resources with our team to support those affected by domestic violence
  • Enhance our workplace by prioritising employee wellbeing and safety
  • Educate Garden Village team leaders about the impact of domestic violence on our community and workforce and how to spot the signs

3) Addressing Elder Abuse

Elder abuse is a significant issue affecting many older adults. Through our collaboration with Liberty, we’re:

  • Raising awareness about this often-overlooked issue
  • Equipping our staff to recognise and respond to signs of elder abuse
  • Strengthening commitment to protect the dignity and rights of older adults
  • Leading by example in creating a society where all older adults are treated with respect

Together, we can work towards a future where everyone has access to stable housing, regardless of age or circumstances, and where elder abuse is effectively addressed and prevented.
